'Toy Story 5,' 'A Different World' Revival Among September Streaming Releases

New installments of popular film franchises, a revival of a classic sitcom, and new music releases are among the entertainment offerings arriving on streaming platforms throughout September.

Disney+ will debut "Toy Story 5" on Sept. 23. The film, co-written and directed by Andrew Stanton, centers on toys competing for a child's attention in a technologically advancing world. The Associated Press film writer Jake Coyle noted that while the movie "may fall shy of the first three" and potentially ranks as the "fifth best of these movies," it maintains the "quality and thoughtfulness that have long distinguished Pixar."

Another notable release on Disney+ is the revival of the beloved HBCU sitcom "A Different World," which premieres Sept. 24. Nearly 40 years after the original aired, the new series follows Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Whitley (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne (Kadeem Hardison). Guy, Hardison, and Jada Pinkett Smith are set to return alongside other original cast members for the first season.

On the music front, country artist Kenny Chesney will release his 21st studio album, "Silver Sands Marina," on Friday. Tinashe is also releasing new music, with her latest project "Popstar" described as experimental, featuring a range of pop styles from sped-up tracks to R&B-infused songs.

Other streaming debuts include:

• "Backrooms," a thriller from filmmaker Kane Parsons, will be available on HBO Max starting Sept. 25. Coyle described the film as a "fitfully unsettling nightmare that never convincingly builds beyond its creepy, dated-decor premise."
• "Tuner," a thriller starring Leo Woodill as a piano tuner involved in the criminal underworld, premieres on Paramount+ on Sept. 21. The film is directed by Daniel Roher.
• "UNABOMBER," a Netflix series starring Jacob Tremblay as Ted Kaczynski, debuts Sept. 25. Russell Crowe and Shailene Woodley also feature in the cast.
• "Brothers," a comedy series starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, begins its run on Apple TV on Wednesday. The show features the actors playing exaggerated versions of themselves as they discover a potential familial connection.
• "S.W.A.T.: Exiles," a spinoff of the CBS procedural, starring Shemar Moore, premieres Friday, Sept. 25, on Starz. The series follows Moore's character, Sgt. Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, as he leads an experimental S.W.A.T. unit.

Video game releases include "Control Resonant," arriving Sept. 24 on PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S, and PC, and "Silent Hill: Townfall," set for release Sept. 24 on PlayStation 5 and PC.
