Tom Grennan Details Sobriety Journey After Daughter's Birth
The singer revealed that a period of excessive drinking and going missing for five days after his daughter's birth served as a wake-up call.
Singer Tom Grennan has shared details of his journey to sobriety, recounting a period following the birth of his daughter when he went missing for five days due to heavy drinking. Grennan, 31, discussed the turning point on the podcast "On The Mend" with Matt Willis, explaining that his struggles intensified after attending an Oasis concert, leading to a blackout.
He married Pilates instructor Danniella Carraturo in May 2024, and their daughter, Dottie, was born in the summer of 2025. Grennan admitted to struggling with alcohol in the early days of fatherhood, describing a situation where he was still drinking heavily at 8:00 AM, two days after his daughter's birth, while his wife was navigating new motherhood.
"My world's falling apart, and my friend, who I hadn't spoken to for probably eight years, messaged me out of the blue, and he was like, 'Are you okay?'" Grennan recalled. This contact, coupled with his own realization that he "couldn't cope anymore" with his drinking, prompted him to seek help. He credits this experience with initiating a serious commitment to sobriety and self-reflection.
Grennan expressed fears that his continued substance abuse would lead to losing his daughter and jeopardizing his career. "If I carry on doing what I'm doing here, I'm gonna... I'm gonna lose her," he stated, also acknowledging the need to respect his fans and the commitment they make by attending his shows. He admitted to performing while under the influence and hiding his condition from audiences.
The singer also spoke candidly about not experiencing an immediate rush of love upon his daughter's birth, contrary to what he had been told. Instead, he described a strong protective instinct and a heightened concern for his wife's well-being during that period. "I was f***ing more worried about her," he said.
He noted that sobriety has brought clarity, allowing him to feel more present and aware. "The fog lifts off your head. I'm just so much more aware. I'm so much more present," Grennan explained. "On The Mend with Matt Willis" is available on podcast platforms.
