Tom Cruise Transforms for Alejandro G. Inarritu's Bold Satire 'Digger'

Tom Cruise undergoes a dramatic transformation, appearing almost unrecognizable with prosthetics, as a jowly, balding oil tycoon in Alejandro G. Inarritu's latest film, "Digger." The darkly comic satire, which premiered at the Royal Film Performance, has been described as bold and often brilliant filmmaking, though its unconventional narrative has left some viewers perplexed.

In the film, Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, the ruthlessly acquisitive boss of Rockwell Oil. The character, at 64, appears to finally look his age, a stark departure from his typical leading-man roles. The narrative begins with Digger preoccupied by his cat's leukemia and a methane leak threatening his workers drilling in Greenland. His concern for his pet, however, overshadows the escalating danger faced by his employees.

The situation in Greenland intensifies when a significant chunk of the polar ice shelf breaks off and heads towards Europe, posing potentially cataclysmic consequences. The autocratic U.S. president, played by John Goodman, and his cabinet convene at Digger's mansion to discuss the crisis, receiving explanations from Digger's anxious head of environmental safety, portrayed by Riz Ahmed.

The film is noted for its sharp satire, with Goodman's President Compson depicted as a temperamental vulgarian whose cabinet meetings are characterized by racism and sexism, yet conclude with prayer. The portrayal of the president, coupled with an energy policy favoring resource extraction in Greenland, has led to speculation about its inspiration.

However, "Digger" reportedly features significant plot twists that subvert initial assumptions. Director Alejandro G. Inarritu, known for "Birdman" and "The Revenant," is said to push his storytelling even further with this film. Cruise himself has called it "next-level filmmaking."

The film draws comparisons to Stanley Kubrick's 1964 masterpiece "Dr. Strangelove," with environmental disaster replacing nuclear warfare as the central threat. One of the film's core messages, delivered through a speech by Digger to European politicians, suggests that humanity's downfall is a consequence of its role as relentless consumers.

Reviews indicate that the film's complex narrative may be best appreciated on a second viewing, with some suggesting it can initially become tangled in its own conceit.
