Tim McGraw Says Grueling '1883' Shoot Pushed Him to His Limit

Tim McGraw revealed that the demanding filming schedule for Taylor Sheridan's Western drama "1883" pushed him to his physical and mental limits, stating that the brutal toll of production meant he "wouldn't have survived" if it had continued much longer.

McGraw, who portrayed James Dutton in the "Yellowstone" prequel alongside his wife Faith Hill as Margaret Dutton, detailed the intense production in an interview with Esquire. The show required 14-hour shooting days, six days a week, for approximately five to six months. This grueling schedule was compounded by McGraw's concert performances, which often involved late-night flights directly from the set. He described a typical demanding day: finishing filming around 6 p.m., taking a flight for a show, returning home at 1 a.m., heading to the gym at 3 a.m., and being back in the makeup chair by 5:30 a.m.

"If it had gone on any longer, I probably wouldn't have survived, put it that way," McGraw told Esquire, reflecting on the experience. He acknowledged that it was the hardest job he and Hill had ever faced, despite his own tough upbringing.

Before filming commenced, the cast underwent a rigorous cowboy camp to learn essential skills such as riding, roping, cattle handling, and shooting. McGraw noted that while he grew up riding horses, the overall experience demanded significant preparation.

"The elements were always fighting us, and you were working with animals, and you were working with extras, and you were working with horses," McGraw said. "But I think I learned more than anything is there's so much value in preparing. And the more you prepare and the more you're ready to do what you're going to do, it takes away a lot of the nervousness."

Despite the challenges, McGraw found the experience rewarding. He cited working alongside his wife and collaborating with Sheridan, whom he praised as a "brilliant writer," as highlights. The series, which debuted in December 2021, explores the Dutton family's journey from Texas to Montana in search of a new life, serving as a prequel to the events of "Yellowstone."
