‘The Love Hypothesis’ Cast Features Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman in Prime Video Adaptation

The film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel, The Love Hypothesis, is now streaming on Prime Video. The romance tells the story of Olive Smith (Lili Reinhart), a Ph.D. candidate, and Dr. Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman), a professor, who engage in a fake dating arrangement.

DECIDER contributor Maddy Casale described the film as a "charmingly cheesy tale complete with classic tropes like found family and fake dating, resulting in a decently entertaining and pleasant final product."

Lili Reinhart stars as Olive Smith, a Ph.D. candidate at Stanford University. In the film, Olive kisses Dr. Adam Carlsen to convince her best friend, Anh, that she has moved on from her crush, Jeremy. Reinhart, also an executive producer on the film, is known for her role as Betty Cooper in Riverdale. She also appeared in Hal & Harper.

Tom Bateman portrays Dr. Adam Carlsen, a Stanford professor nicknamed “Dr. Evil” by his students due to his stern demeanor. Carlsen agrees to the fake dating ruse to demonstrate to his colleagues that he has a reason to remain at Stanford, rather than accept a job offer at Harvard. Bateman’s film credits include Much Ado About Nothing, Snatched, Death on the Nile, Thirteen Lives, and Hedda.

Rachel Marsh plays Anh Pham, Olive’s supportive best friend and a fellow Stanford student. Anh confesses her feelings for Jeremy but hesitates out of respect for Olive. Marsh has previously appeared in Adults, Unstable, The Morning Show, and Fallout.

Nicholas Duvernay is cast as Jeremy Langley, a Ph.D. candidate who catches Olive’s attention. However, Jeremy's romantic interest lies with Anh. Duvernay’s recent work includes the Hulu series Not Suitable for Work, Bel-Air, and Reminders of Him.

Jaboukie Young-White plays Malcolm Browne, Olive’s friend and roommate, who is a student of Dr. Adam Carlsen and dislikes him. Young-White is a comedian and actor whose credits include Trash Mountain, BoJack Horseman, Fairfax, Only Murders in the Building, and Abbott Elementary.

Arty Froushan portrays Dr. Thomas Benton, a Harvard professor whose lab Olive seeks to join. Benton was also a graduate student with Dr. Adam Carlsen. Froushan’s recent credits include Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale and Daredevil: Born Again.
