The 'Curse of Torchwood': A Look at the Challenges Faced by Stars of the Sci-Fi Series
Two decades after its debut, the stars of the racy Doctor Who spin-off have navigated controversies, personal struggles, and public scrutiny.
When Torchwood premiered in 2006, it was promoted as an adult-oriented spin-off of the long-running Doctor Who, exploring darker themes and mature subject matter. Created by Russell T Davies, the science fiction series centered on Captain Jack Harkness and his team of alien hunters, and ran for four seasons until 2011. Despite ending on a cliffhanger, there are no current plans for its revival.
John Barrowman – Captain Jack Harkness
John Barrowman, who portrayed the immortal Captain Jack Harkness, became a prominent figure in the franchise. However, his public profile has diminished following misconduct allegations. In 2021, reports emerged of Barrowman exposing himself to co-workers on the sets of Doctor Who and Torchwood between 2005 and 2011. This led to his dismissal from ITV's Dancing on Ice. Barrowman has stated he was "blacklisted completely" from the entertainment industry, which he said led to depression and suicidal thoughts. He has since defended his actions, suggesting they were misunderstood and occurred in a different time on set, where "everybody was doing outrageous, silly things." He has also faced public criticism for comments made about his travel experiences.
Eve Myles – Gwen Cooper
Eve Myles starred as Gwen Cooper, a human recruited by Harkness, and was a consistent presence throughout all four seasons. Since Torchwood, Myles has appeared in several dramas, including BBC's Keeping Faith and ITV's Gone. In 2022, Myles was indirectly involved in a public exchange with John Barrowman. After Barrowman commented on a video showing him and Myles expressing mutual affection, fans accused him of "spewing rhetoric." Barrowman subsequently deleted his X account after facing backlash for airing grievances publicly.
James Marsters – Captain John Hart
James Marsters, known for his role in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, joined Torchwood for its second series. Creator Russell T Davies noted Marsters had actively sought a role on the show. In recent years, Marsters has experienced personal upheaval, including the finalization of his divorce from Patricia Rahman in February of this year, following their separation in 2021 after a decade of marriage. Their divorce proceedings involved resolving property division and spousal support. Marsters was previously married to Liane Davidson, with whom he shares a son.
Gareth David Lloyd – Ianto Jones
Gareth David Lloyd portrayed Ianto Jones, a character who became a fan favorite, particularly due to his relationship with Captain Jack Harkness. Ianto's on-screen death in the third series, "Children of Earth," remains a poignant moment for fans. Lloyd has continued his connection to the Torchwood universe through Big Finish audio dramas. This year also marked the dismantling of a fan-made shrine in Cardiff dedicated to Ianto Jones. While the shrine's caretaker expressed devastation, a spokesperson for Mermaid Quay indicated plans for a new plaque after maintenance is completed.
