Taylor Swift's "Patient Zero" Video Reveals Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell's On-Set Argument

Taylor Swift has offered fans a behind-the-scenes look at her "Patient Zero" music video, revealing the subject of an intense on-set argument between co-stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. In an expanded eight-minute video released on Apple Music, the audio stripped from the music reveals the actors were debating whether Brendan Fraser starred in "Tarzan" or "George of the Jungle."

"I’m telling you, Brendan Fraser was Tarzan!" Johnson declared, to which Farrell retorted, "George of the Jungle!" Swift, laughing at the exchange, described it as "the dumbest fight ever."

The scene unfolds at a large dining table, with Johnson and Farrell positioned at opposite ends as they engage in a heated verbal exchange. The "Patient Zero" video premiered at the MTV Video Music Awards last Sunday.

Swift, who directed the video, expressed her passion for the project. "I’ve been wanting to make this video my entire life," she stated at the beginning of the behind-the-scenes footage. She also shared her creative process, reflecting on the production design and cinematography: "Walking through here and seeing the way that Chivo has lit this and the way the sets are and how brilliantly Ethan [Tobman] has done this production design, I’m kind of rethinking the release of the video."

Swift playfully questioned the timing of the VMAs in a recording from March 2025, asking, "Ethan, google: when are the VMAs?"

The song "Patient Zero" is featured on the deluxe edition of Swift's album "The Life of a Showgirl." It tells the story of a woman who escapes a toxic relationship and then assists her ex's current girlfriend, who is also experiencing suffering.

In the music video, Johnson and Farrell portray a seemingly idyllic couple whose relationship's toxic undercurrents are eventually revealed. Swift appears in the video as a ghost, subtly attempting to warn Johnson of impending danger.

Swift recently received the inaugural Artist Director Honors award at Sunday's VMAs ceremony. Following the video's premiere, she shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, thanking Johnson and Farrell for their "time, taste, and talent." She described the experience of working with them as "truly delightful" and noted Farrell's impressive turn as a villain, calling him "an absolute light and as kind as they come."

She further elaborated on her creative aspirations for the video, stating, "With the Patient Zero video, I got to explore the cinematic and literary genres I love so much. I wanted to incorporate elements of gothic ghost stories, true crime, psychological thrillers all in a setting I hadn’t really shot in much."

Swift concluded by thanking MTV for the world premiere opportunity at the VMAs, a venue that celebrates music videos.
