Taylor Swift's "Patient Zero" Music Video Packed With Easter Eggs

Taylor Swift’s recently released music video for her song “Patient Zero” premiered at the MTV Video Music Awards 2026, and has quickly become a focal point for fan analysis due to its abundance of Easter eggs. Directed by Swift herself, the video features actors Dakota Fanning and Colin Farrell in prominent roles.

Several scenes in the video draw parallels to Swift's past work and personal life. One notable scene depicts Fanning and Farrell in a heated argument across a long table, a visual reminiscent of Swift's Eras Tour performance of "Tolerate It." In that performance, Swift sang across a table, seemingly directed at an indifferent partner, which many fans interpreted as a nod to her past relationship with Joe Alwyn.

The fashion in the music video also sparked discussion. The gown worn by Swift and Fanning at a gala scene closely resembles an outfit Swift wore to the BAFTAs 2019 afterparty, an event she attended with Alwyn. At the time, Swift had skipped the Grammy Awards to support Alwyn and his film "The Favourite."

Swift's use of red wine as a motif is also present in “Patient Zero.” While other characters at the gala are seen drinking Champagne, Fanning's character opts for red wine. This beverage has appeared in Swift's lyrics, often symbolizing deep hurt or lasting emotional marks from relationships, as seen in songs like "Clean" and "Maroon." A red wine bottle was also featured in the short film for "All Too Well."

Another scene shows Farrell confronting Fanning about her drinking at the gala. This interaction is seen by fans as echoing themes in Swift's music, such as "Fortnight," where she refers to herself as a "functioning alcoholic," and "Florida!!!," which suggests using alcohol to cope with difficult emotions.

The music video also features an Aston Martin, a car that fans recognized from Swift's "Delicate" music video. In the "Delicate" video, Swift is seen dancing on the car, symbolizing the joyful beginnings of her relationship with Alwyn. In contrast, the "Patient Zero" video shows Swift's character lying on the same car as a ghost, a visual many fans interpreted as representing the demise of that relationship.

A tombstone prominently displayed in the video features a wedding photo of Swift and Farrell's characters with the dates "1986 – 2022." This has been widely interpreted as Swift's way of marking the end of her relationship with Alwyn, whom she dated from 2016 to 2023, with the year 2022 possibly signifying the period when the relationship began to deteriorate.

Graveyards themselves have been a recurring symbol in Swift's music videos, often signifying the end of eras or relationships, and sometimes serving as a space for rebirth. The "Patient Zero" video opens with a graveyard scene featuring Fanning and Swift's ghost character. This parallels the opening of her "Look What You Made Me Do" music video, where she emerged from a grave to address public backlash. In that earlier video, a headstone labeled "Nils Sjöberg" was a direct reference to her pseudonym used when co-writing with ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris.

Swift announced the release of "Patient Zero" and three other new songs as part of the deluxe version of "The Life of a Showgirl" on Sept. 22. She had been hinting at these releases for weeks, including during a surprise cameo in a skit for "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" at the Emmys 2026.

Explaining the inspiration for "Patient Zero," Swift shared that the song stemmed from a conversation with friends where one recounted being contacted by an ex's new girlfriend seeking advice. This collective experience of hearing similar stories from friends about ex-partners led to the theme of the song.
