Taylor Swift's latest musical offerings, four new songs featured on the deluxe edition of her album 'The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore', have drawn polarized reactions from critics. Released just weeks after the original album and following her marriage to Travis Kelce, the new tracks include "Patient Zero," "Cleveland!," "Pink Clouding," and "Babylon."
Early reviews suggest a division among critics, with some labeling the new material as "derivative and flat." The Independent noted one song as a "diamond" while deeming the other three "duds." Similarly, The Telegraph featured a headline from a self-described "Swiftie" stating the songs were "terrible," "derivative and flat," and that Swift risked "rubbishing her own legacy because she’s scared to take a day off."
The Guardian was particularly critical of "Cleveland!," an ode to Kelce, describing it as "appalling" and "dogs***" with "oozing self-satisfaction." This review also suggested that the more Swift releases, the weaker her output becomes, recommending a creative break.
"Patient Zero" was described as "regurgitated" with a "smug" tone, and "Pink Clouding" was criticized for its "dull beats" and uninspired lyrics. However, "Babylon" received praise in the Independent review as a significant improvement and "such an improvement on the other three songs it feels like a relief."
In contrast, Variety offered a more favorable outlook, calling "Cleveland!" a "charmer" and predicting "euphoria" for fans with "Pink Clouding." The publication praised "Patient Zero" for its forgiving yet memorable nature and hailed "Babylon" for its "suggestive and resonant" sound and strong lyrical content.
The original 'The Life of a Showgirl' achieved the biggest opening week in American history. "Patient Zero" has climbed to the number two position on the US iTunes chart, though it has not yet surpassed "Choosin' Texas" by Ella Langley.
A music video for "Patient Zero," featuring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, is slated to air during the MTV Video Music Awards.
