Taylor Swift Becomes Most Awarded Artist in MTV VMAs History
Pop superstar Taylor Swift shattered records at the MTV Video Music Awards, securing the most wins by any artist in the show's history, while Madonna also took home significant awards.
Taylor Swift achieved a historic milestone at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, becoming the artist with the most VMA wins of all time. She secured the coveted Video of the Year award for her track "The Fate of Ophelia." Swift entered the evening tied with Beyoncé for the most wins and surpassed that record during the ceremony.
Swift also received the inaugural Artist Director award for her self-written and self-directed "Ophelia" music video. She dedicated her new award to Dolly Parton, calling her the "ultimate showgirl."
During the Los Angeles ceremony, hosted by Snoop Dogg, Swift debuted the music video for her new song "Patient Zero," a dark gothic thriller featuring actors Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. This marks her first music video since marrying NFL player Travis Kelce and is one of four new tracks on her recently released album, "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore."
Female artists were prominent throughout the night. Madonna, the "original Queen of Pop," won Artist of the Year, Best Dance, and Best Collaboration for her song "Bring Your Love" with Sabrina Carpenter. Madonna's team also earned awards for best cinematography and choreography for "Confessions II."
"Most of you were probably not born when I performed at the very first VMAs 43 years ago," Madonna remarked, recalling an early career mishap. She added, "I spent the last year and a half finding myself, believing in myself and really making the music that I wanted to make."
Madonna's performance included a duet with Carpenter and an appearance by Charli XCX. Reflecting on their collaboration, Madonna mentioned that Carpenter's team took five days to respond to her initial outreach, prompting her to DM Carpenter directly. Carpenter clarified that her team does respond but that a direct message is the fastest way to reach her.
Lisa from the K-pop group Blackpink made history by becoming the first Asian solo artist to win the Best Pop category for her song "Dream." She expressed gratitude to her fans, known as Lillies, stating, "I wouldn't be here without you guys."
Other notable winners included BTS for Best Group and Song of the Year for "Swim." Olivia Rodrigo's "The Cure" won Best Alternative, and Nirvana was honored with the Video Vanguard award. PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson won Best Art Direction for "Stateside." British singers Raye and Sienna Spiro were recognized as Best New Artist.
