Taylor Swift Becomes Most Awarded Artist in MTV VMA History
Swift surpassed Beyoncé’s VMA record and received a new award for her directorial work.
Taylor Swift has officially broken her tie with Beyoncé, becoming the most awarded artist in the history of the MTV Video Music Awards. The milestone was reached on Sunday, when Swift, who was nominated for nine awards, won the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors.
Prior to Sunday's ceremony, both artists held a record 30 VMA trophies each. Swift's win for Artist Director Honors brought her total to 31, and she later increased it to 32 by winning Video of the Year for "The Fate of Ophelia" later in the evening. She dedicated her final award of the night to Dolly Parton.
The Artist Director Honors is a new award established by MTV to recognize music artists whose work behind the camera has advanced the art of visual storytelling and expanded the possibilities of music videos.
Actor Dakota Johnson presented the award to Swift, describing her as a "storyteller" and an "architect of emotional landscapes." Johnson highlighted Swift's ability to capture universal feelings with a unique style through her writing, performing, and directorial work. "She isn't just one of the most decorated artists in the history of the VMAs, she is the single most recognized video director in this show's history," Johnson stated.
