Taylor Swift Arrives Solo at MTV VMAs, Nears Record
The pop superstar, who recently released a deluxe version of her album, accepted an inaugural honor and could surpass Beyoncé's VMA record.
Taylor Swift arrived at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night without her husband, Travis Kelce, who was across the country with his NFL team. Swift, 36, confidently walked the red carpet in a two-toned gown featuring a black sleeveless bodice with a mesh back and a sparkly silver skirt. She added height with rhinestone-embellished heels and appeared to debut shorter bangs.
Fans were heard chanting "Mrs. Kelce" as Swift made her entrance. Her appearance comes days after the release of "The Life Of A Showgirl: The Encore," a surprise deluxe version of her 2025 album. The new record, which includes four new songs, has received largely unfavorable reviews, with a Metacritic score of 39.
Swift is set to receive the first-ever Artist Director Honors, an award celebrating artists who have pushed creative boundaries and developed a distinct directorial voice. With this honor, she could break her tie with Beyoncé, as both artists entered the night with 30 VMA awards. Beyoncé had no nominations for this year's awards, positioning Swift to become the sole record holder.
Swift has directed the visuals for numerous tracks, including "The Fate of Ophelia," "cardigan," and "All Too Well: The Short Film."
Madonna led nominations this year with 11 nods, followed by Swift with nine. Both are vying for Video of the Year, with Swift nominated for "The Fate of Ophelia" and Madonna for "Confessions II (The Film)." The music video for Swift's latest single, "Patient Zero," from "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore," was scheduled to premiere during the awards ceremony.
Other artists with multiple nominations include Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter, who are tied with seven nods each. The Artist of the Year category features Madonna, Swift, Grande, Carpenter, Bruno Mars, and Morgan Wallen.
