The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles proved to be a night of significant wins and memorable moments, with Taylor Swift and Madonna taking center stage. Swift, 36, secured key awards, including the inaugural Artist Director Honors and Video of the Year for her track "The Fate Of Ophelia." She also won Best Direction for her "Opalite" music video.
Swift's generosity towards fans was highlighted when she was filmed gently encouraging a timid young fan to join her for a selfie, a moment widely praised on social media for her attentiveness to fans. During her acceptance speech for Video of the Year, Swift paid tribute to the late Dolly Parton, who passed away on August 25 at age 80, calling her "the ultimate showgirl" and praising her storytelling and grace.
With her wins, Swift surpassed Beyoncé to become the most decorated solo artist in MTV VMA history.
Madonna also made a significant impact, winning Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter for their song "Bring Your Love." However, her acceptance speech included a pointed comment directed at Carpenter's team, noting her impatience with the perceived delay in response from Carpenter's entourage. "Everybody who knows me knows how impatient I am. And when five days passed and I still didn't get connected with Sabrina and didn't hear back from her about whether she wanted to do a song with me - five days! - I DM'ed her," Madonna stated. Carpenter responded defensively, assuring that her team does reply and that a direct line to her is the fastest way to get in touch.
Madonna also opened the show with a performance that recalled her iconic 2003 VMA appearance. She later won Best Dance for "Confessions II - The Film," but appeared to forget the award's category during her speech, adding a remark about having a laser "stuck" up her posterior.
The ceremony featured a tribute to the late Dolly Parton, with Kacey Musgraves performing Parton's 1974 track "I Will Always Love You." The tribute began with a clip of Parton introducing the song. In contrast, a tribute to George Michael, featuring performances by Teddy Swims, Raye, Sombr, and Adam Lambert, drew criticism from some viewers. Adam Lambert should have handled the whole d**n tribute, though Raye & Sombr acquitted themselves admirably."
Host Snoop Dogg kicked off the show with an opening monologue that included a viral moment where he promised cannabis to award winners. "It wouldn't be a Snoop Dogg party if I didn't provide some of that special sticky icky icky," he said, clarifying it was for winners only.
Other notable moments included Nirvana accepting the Video Vanguard Award, during which Pat Smear was seen lighting a cigarette on stage.
