The interconnected worlds of Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" universe may soon converge, as fans and stars of the spinoff series "Dutton Ranch" and "Marshals" express a strong desire for a crossover episode. This speculation follows the Season 1 finales of both shows, which left the children of the Dutton family in peril under similar circumstances.
"Marshals," starring Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, concluded its first season with Kayce's son, Tate, unknowingly traveling to Texas with antagonist Tom Weaver. Meanwhile, "Dutton Ranch," featuring Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler, ended its season with the kidnapping of their adopted son, Carter, by a cartel in Rio Paloma, Texas.
The parallel cliffhangers have fueled anticipation for a potential storyline where Kayce, working as a U.S. Marshal, might need to venture into "Dutton Ranch" territory to rescue Tate. This scenario also opens the door for a reunion between Kayce and his sister, Beth, and her husband, Rip.
Actors Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have publicly voiced their interest in a crossover. "I’d love to work with Luke," Hauser told TV Insider, referring to Luke Grimes. "I love people that we've worked with over the years in Yellowstone, but the fact that he's on his show and we're on this show, if there's a way to somewhere down the road do something special where he comes and visits us or if we go to Montana, great."
Reilly echoed this sentiment, stating, "Beth misses her brother, so I would love that to happen. And we were all very close. Wes Bentley, who played Jamie, Kelsey [Asbille], who played Monica Dutton]. We were a family, and we miss them very much. So the more we can get back in, that’s what we’re fighting for, Cole and I."
Such a crossover would not only resolve the cliffhangers from both series but also further solidify the narrative ties between the shows, which share a common universe. "Marshals" follows Kayce Dutton and his son Tate in Montana, while "Dutton Ranch" focuses on Beth, Rip, and Carter's efforts to build a beef business in Texas.
While the shows have distinct premises and locations, the shared universe created by Taylor Sheridan allows for inherent connections. Previous crossovers within Sheridan's work include the "One Chicago" event that united "Chicago Fire," "Chicago Med," and "Chicago P.D.," and the "Law & Order" franchise's frequent interlinking episodes. The potential for "Marshals" and "Dutton Ranch" to follow suit presents an opportunity to bring characters together, particularly in light of their children being in danger.
Despite the enthusiasm from fans and cast members, a crossover remains unconfirmed. The showrunners of "Dutton Ranch," Benjamin Cavell, and "Marshals," Spencer Hudnut, would need to collaborate to bring such an event to fruition.
