Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone Face Fan Scrutiny Over 'Housemaid 2' Scene
Netizens criticize the actors' on-screen chemistry and performance during filming of the sequel to the hit erotic thriller.
Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone were recently seen filming an intense scene for "The Housemaid's Secret," the upcoming sequel to their 2025 hit film. The actors were spotted in Hoboken, New Jersey, with Morrone kissing Sweeney's forehead in a moment described as full of emotion and subtle intensity.
However, the scene did not resonate positively with all viewers. Social media users took to platforms like Twitter to criticize the acting, with one commenter stating, "I can hear the bad acting from here." Another user remarked on Sweeney's expression, saying, "Notice how her facial expression doesn’t change in the slightest at any moment... It’s as if she’s just…reciting the lines." Other comments included "The look in her eyes are so dead," and "Yessss give us nothing Sydney."
The Housemaid, based on Freida McFadden's 2022 novel, centers on Millie (Sweeney), a live-in housemaid seeking a fresh start. She takes a job with the seemingly refined Nina Winchester (Amanda Seyfried), wife of Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar). The plot thickens as Millie finds herself in danger as the Winchesters' perfect facade crumbles. Morrone portrayed Enzo, the brooding landscaper.
The original erotic thriller was produced on a budget of $35 million and achieved significant box office success, grossing over $400 million worldwide. It became a career-high for both director Paul Feig and Sweeney.
Following the film's success, speculation about a sequel began. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed earlier this year that a sequel was in development with Feig directing, aiming for a 2027 release. Business Insider also reported that screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine had completed the script.
Sweeney has expressed enthusiasm for reprising her role, telling People, "I would love to [reprise the role]. I was such a huge fan of the books, so I would be just as happy as everyone else being able to see more Housemaids come to life and getting to explore more of Millie." She described her character as "spicy" and a "fighter" who "knows what she believes in and she stands up for it," adding that she loves "seeing movies that have just fully embraced female rage."
Feig previously commented on the strong chemistry between Sweeney and Seyfried, stating, "They are both such powerful talents and work so well off each other that you very quickly get sucked into their onscreen world." Both actresses also served as executive producers on the project.
