Strictly Judge Craig Revel Horwood Compares New Hosting Trio to 'Awkward' Family Christmas

Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood has compared the show's new hosting trio—Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe, and Johannes Radebe—to an "awkward" family Christmas. His comments come as the show faces viewer criticism following the departures of long-time hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman.

During the launch show, the three presenters rotated positions, with viewers quickly identifying Widdicombe as the "spare part." Despite this initial fan reaction, Revel Horwood believes the new team will eventually find their footing and "fly."

"As a new team, as we’re all aware, it’s like having a new family member. You know... you’re just meeting, and the first Christmas together with the daughter’s new husband could be awkward," Revel Horwood told The Sun. "It’s about building relationships, and in my opinion, a really, really good job. I know that from this level they’ll just fly."

Revel Horwood praised Emma Willis, calling her an "old hand" and "a natural" who knows "exactly what she's doing." He also commended Johannes Radebe, noting that his background as a dancer brings a unique perspective, allowing him to ask informed questions and offer opinions on the contestants' performances. However, Revel Horwood humorously pointed out that Radebe had adopted his signature "darling" catchphrase.

While acknowledging Widdicombe's comedic talent, Revel Horwood admitted that the comedian's inexperience and nerves were evident, particularly when he missed a cue during a live segment. "Josh is very funny when he’s off the cuff. He’s absolutely brilliant, and I know that he will come into his own. He’s absolutely hilarious when he gets going," Revel Horwood said. He believes Widdicombe will excel once he settles into the role.

Viewers have expressed mixed reactions to the new presenting arrangement, with some suggesting that the BBC misassigned the roles. Many fans believe Widdicombe, known for his comedic commentary on "The Last Leg," would be better suited to a solo role, similar to Claudia Winkleman's previous position.

This sentiment was echoed by some critics who argued that Widdicombe himself is not the primary issue, but rather the decision to employ three hosts and the way their roles were structured. For the first live show, Willis was positioned on the dancefloor to interact with contestants, while Radebe was in the "Clauditorium" to debrief with professionals and their partners. Widdicombe was placed alongside Willis, delivering punchlines to her commentary, which led to him appearing as a "spare part."

The debate surrounding the new hosts comes after judge Motsi Mabuse defended the trio, addressing claims of tension between herself and Widdicombe. Mabuse stated that the show is "finding our rhythm" and urged viewers to be patient, emphasizing that significant changes require time. "After 21 years, a big change needs time. Why do we expect everything new to be perfect immediately?" she asked on Instagram. "Critique matters, but so does how we deliver it. We can be honest and still be kind. Give it time."
