'Street Fighter' and 'Clayface' Debut as Skydance Eyes Box Office Success
The studio's first two films under its merged mega-studio banner are projected for modest opening weekends, with analysts looking to future releases for stronger performance.
Skydance's initial film slate from its newly merged mega-studio, featuring "Street Fighter" and "Clayface," is tracking for moderate opening weekend box office returns, according to recent industry analysis. Both films are anticipated to earn approximately $30 million each in their debut weekends.
"Street Fighter," a cinematic adaptation of the popular 1990s video game, is set to premiere this Friday. Industry forecasters at Boxoffice Pro predict a domestic opening weekend range of $25 million to $35 million, with a consensus expectation of $30 million. The film's marketing strategy heavily emphasizes millennial nostalgia, drawing comparisons to Amazon MGM's "Masters of the Universe," which debuted with $29 million earlier this year. Another relevant comparison is Warner Bros.' "Mortal Kombat II," which opened to $38 million.

"Clayface," a film set within the world of Batman and described as "horror-adjacent," is scheduled for release the following week. Current tracking suggests an opening weekend between $25 million and $30 million, though this figure could rise to $35 million with increased marketing efforts. The film's production budget was $40 million. Online buzz surrounding "Clayface" has been significant, with some comparisons made to the film "Obsession."

Analysts note that "Clayface" lacks direct comparables among recent DC Comics titles. Daniel Loria, a guru at Boxoffice Pro, suggests that Sony's "Spider-Man" villain spin-offs might offer the closest benchmark, though he cautions that "Clayface" is an R-rated, horror-leaning film, which typically appeals to a smaller audience than traditional superhero blockbusters. The performance of these initial releases could place additional pressure on the studio's upcoming "Superman" sequel next summer to achieve substantial box office returns.
