A-list celebrities and cultural VIPs are flocking to screenings of the Spanish period piece "La Bola Negra," a film generating significant buzz as a potential contender for Best Picture at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Notable attendees at showings in New York City, including the Paris Theater and Angelika Film Center, have included singer Sabrina Carpenter, musician Paul Simon, actor F. Murray Abraham, photographer Nan Goldin, and actor Zachary Quinto. Comedian Matt Rogers, content creator Matt Bernstein, and actor Kevin McHale have also been seen viewing the film.

"La Bola Negra," directed by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, has garnered accolades at numerous film festivals, including Toronto, San Sebastián, the Hamptons, Busan, Sydney, Santa Fe, and Chicago. The New York Post lauded the film this month, calling it "one of the best movies of the year."

The film, acquired by Netflix at the Cannes Film Festival, has also achieved box office success. It holds the record for the highest per-screen average for a Spanish film and ranks as the second-highest for a non-English film, trailing only the 2020 Best Picture winner "Parasite."

"La Bola Negra" is an ambitious drama that explores the intertwined lives of three gay men across three distinct eras: 1932, 1937, and 2017. The narrative is inspired by the works of renowned Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca. The film expands its theatrical release this weekend.

Paul Simon has also been spotted at a screening. The Post has called the film one of the year’s best movies.
