“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” continued its dominant run in theaters, earning an estimated $144.5 million in its second weekend and solidifying its status as a major blockbuster. The Sony-Marvel film has now grossed $1.67 billion worldwide in just 10 days, positioning it for a potential spot among the highest-grossing films of all time. Domestically, it has accumulated $655.1 million.

In its first week of release, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” became the highest-grossing film of the year, surpassing “Toy Story 5” with its $1.07 billion worldwide total. No Sony film has previously achieved more than $100 million in its second weekend. Its sophomore performance of $144.5 million came close to the record of $149.2 million set by “The Force Awakens” in 2015.

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” also crossed the $1 billion mark globally. In its fourth weekend, the Universal Pictures release added $31.5 million domestically, bringing its worldwide total to $1.1 billion. This achievement makes “The Odyssey” Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date, surpassing “The Dark Knight Rises” ($1.08 billion) and “The Dark Knight” ($1 billion).

A significant portion of “The Odyssey’s” success has been driven by IMAX screenings, where it has grossed $147.3 million domestically, making it the highest-grossing domestic release of all time for IMAX. The film is set to open in China on Friday.

The combined success of these two films has contributed to Hollywood's strongest box office year since the pandemic began. Ticket sales are up 18.5% compared to last year, with five films already surpassing $1 billion worldwide, a figure not seen since 2019. The other billion-dollar films this year include “Michael,” “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” and “Toy Story 5.

Industry analysts forecast that total summer theatrical revenue will reach $4 billion on Monday, a benchmark indicative of a thriving market. The summer of 2023, boosted by “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” was the only summer to surpass $4 billion since the pandemic. Through Sunday, summer revenue is only $14.8 million shy of that $4 billion mark.

In contrast, two comedies released during the weekend had limited impact. “One Night Only,” a romantic comedy, opened with $5.7 million. The film, which carries a production budget of approximately $25 million, received mixed reviews but garnered a “B+” CinemaScore from audiences. “Super Troopers 3,” the latest installment in the comedy series from Broken Lizard, debuted in fourth place with $4 million.
