The Spice Girls have released a comprehensive 14 CD box set, titled 'The Singles Collection,' to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their debut single 'Wannabe.' However, the £277.99 collection has drawn criticism from fans who found the tracklisting heavily padded with multiple remixes of hit songs rather than new material or anticipated reunion news.
The box set, described as the first complete collection of the group's singles, B-sides, and previously unreleased recordings, includes various editions ranging from £94.99 for the CD set to the premium bundle featuring 14 vinyl records, 14 CDs, a poster, and stickers. Despite promises of 'surprises from the vault,' the tracklists reveal an extensive focus on remixes.
For instance, the first CD is dedicated to 'Wannabe,' featuring 13 different versions including instrumental, karaoke, and rap-less editions, alongside the original B-side 'Bumper to Bumper.' Similarly, the second CD contains 12 remixes of 'Say You'll Be There' and its B-side 'Take Me Home.' CD 13 includes club remixes of 'Wannabe,' and CD 14 comprises demos of the band's hits, with four previously unreleased tracks.
Fans expressed their disappointment on social media, with many having hoped for a reunion tour announcement. Comments ranged from pleas for a full-lineup tour and 'Spice World' to be available on streaming platforms, to expressions of frustration over the "waste of excitement."
The band members had previously hinted at marking the milestone. However, plans for a 30th-anniversary tour were reportedly axed earlier this year due to disagreements among the group. A potential Netflix project also faced cancellation, with reports suggesting Geri Halliwell was hesitant to commit.
Mel C has acknowledged the desire for a reunion, stating in past interviews that while they communicate and want to do something, timing and agreement on the right project are crucial. Victoria Beckham, who had previously opted out of tours to focus on her fashion career, had shown signs of increasing engagement with the group's activities, including an Instagram singalong. Despite these gestures, a full reunion tour remains unconfirmed.
Despite fan complaints, three editions of the box set, including the most expensive £277 option, sold out within 24 hours of being available for pre-order.
