Sophie Turner has been cast as Lara Croft in a Prime Video television adaptation of the Tomb Raider video game series, the broadcaster reported Thursday.

The series was created and written by Phoebe Waller‑Bridge, the British writer and performer best known for Fleabag, and is described as the first major project to emerge from Waller‑Bridge’s multi‑year deal with Amazon announced in 2019. Tomb Raider is based on the long‑running computer game franchise centred on the fictional adventurer and archaeologist Lara Croft.

Turner, who rose to prominence as Sansa Stark on HBO’s Game of Thrones and has appeared as Jean Grey in the X‑Men film series, said she was "thrilled beyond measure" to take on the role. "She's such an iconic character, who means so much to so many - and I am giving everything I've got," Turner said. She added that following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander — who have previously played the character on film — were "massive shoes to fill," but expressed confidence in Waller‑Bridge's leadership, saying, "with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can't wait for you all to see what we have cooking." Turner has also said in interviews that she now seeks projects that are "super unique and very niche."

The Tomb Raider franchise, originating in the 1990s, has been adapted for film before and remains one of the best‑known video game properties, centred on a globe‑trotting archaeologist who combines action and puzzle solving. The Prime Video series follows a recent trend of streaming platforms commissioning high‑profile adaptations of video game and comic properties for serialized television.

Details about the series’ full cast, episode count, production schedule and release date were not disclosed in the announcement. Waller‑Bridge’s Amazon deal, first publicised in 2019, included commitments to develop original content for the streaming service; Tomb Raider is being billed as the first significant project to result from that agreement.

Representatives for Turner, Waller‑Bridge and Prime Video did not immediately provide further comment beyond the casting announcement.
