Hollywood's current fascination with horror cinema continues with the emerging viral hit 'Breeder,' a film that blends morbid comedy with unsettling terror. The movie is gaining traction among horror enthusiasts and critics for its unique premise and disturbing dark humor.

'Breeder' centers on a financially struggling college researcher who accepts an offer from an eccentric poodle breeder. The breeder, operating from a remote ranch, proposes a lucrative deal: $20,000 if the researcher assists in her transition from breeding dogs to breeding humans.

The film has been described as "bizarre" and "bone-chilling," with many anticipating its rise to cult classic status. Critics have noted its departure from conventional horror tropes, emphasizing atmospheric dread and escalating weirdness over jump scares and gore.

"Avoids the jump scares, goop and gore of many horror flicks, instead focusing on moody, claustrophobic terror and wrenching up the weirdness," wrote critic Neil Pond. Caroline Colvin of Dread Central called it a "delightful (and technically stunning) watch."

Starring in the role of the antagonist is Dot-Marie Jones, a 15-time world arm wrestling champion also known for her role as Coach Beiste in the television series 'Glee.'

Written and directed by Alex Goyette, 'Breeder' represents a growing trend of horror filmmakers launching their careers on platforms like YouTube. This path mirrors that of other successful directors such as Curry Barker ('Obsession'), Kane Parsons ('Backrooms'), Danny and Michael Philippou ('Talk To Me'), and Markiplier ('Iron Lung').

Goyette spent several years securing funding for 'Breeder,' eventually raising approximately one million dollars from various investors. The film premiered at the Tribeca Festival in June and was subsequently acquired by Independent Film Company and Shudder for distribution.

'Breeder' is set to officially release in theaters on October 28. It is among the final major horror releases of the year, following a slate that includes 'Obsession,' 'Backrooms,' 'Resident Evil,' 'Scream 7,' and 'Buddy.'

The horror trend has also extended to television, with Amazon Prime Video's 'Carrie' series and Peacock's 'Crystal Lake,' a 'Friday the 13th' franchise series, achieving significant success. 'Crystal Lake' is reportedly the fourth-best performing scripted original series on Peacock, while Mike Flanagan's 'Carrie' has been renewed for a second season.

The next major theatrical horror release will be Robert Eggers' 'Werewolf,' scheduled for December 25.
