Sacha Baron Cohen to Star in Quentin Tarantino's West End Debut Play

Sacha Baron Cohen is slated to star in Quentin Tarantino's first West End play, "The Popinjay Cavalier," which is set to premiere at London's Phoenix Theatre on March 18, 2027. The production marks a collaboration between two figures known for pushing boundaries in their respective fields.

Tarantino, 63, and Baron Cohen, 55, have both courted controversy throughout their careers. Tarantino is often cited for his graphic violence, language, and portrayal of marginalized groups in films like "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs." Baron Cohen is recognized for his provocative humor and satirical characters, such as Borat and Ali G, which often expose prejudice and hypocrisy.

"The Popinjay Cavalier" is described as a "rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise." The play is set in 1830s Europe and follows the story of Rupert Sebastian Thomas Jr. (played by Baron Cohen), an actor who travels to Paris to perform at the Comédie-Française. His journey takes a perilous turn after making ill-advised remarks about the French, leading to an unexpected adventure.

Baron Cohen expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Quentin called, I said yes before he even got to say his first 'motherf*****'. When the best director in the world calls, you don't ask questions. I am beyond delighted that we will be losing our West End virginity together. I have made him promise not to be gentle."

Tarantino, known for directing acclaimed films such as "Jackie Brown," "Kill Bill," and "Django Unchained," first revealed his intentions to stage a play in 2025, indicating that the script was complete. He estimated the project would require a year and a half to two years of his time if successful.

The play draws inspiration from classic Hollywood swashbuckler films and the writings of George Bruce, Ernst Vajda, and Jesse Lasky Jr. Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions are producing the play.

Full casting for "The Popinjay Cavalier" will be announced at a later date. Tickets go on sale Monday, with priority access for those who signed up, followed by a public sale. Prices start at £25, with a significant number of tickets available for under £50.
