Robert Carlyle Joins Guy Ritchie's 'The Gentlemen' Amid Meghan Markle Casting Rumors
Actor Robert Carlyle is reportedly set to join the cast of Netflix's 'The Gentlemen,' while reports suggest the Duchess of Sussex will not be cast in the series.
Robert Carlyle, known for his role as Begbie in "Trainspotting," is reportedly the latest addition to the all-star cast of Guy Ritchie's Netflix series, "The Gentlemen."
Carlyle, 65, is expected to be announced as part of the cast following the show's renewal for a third season. He is slated to appear alongside Theo James, Vinnie Jones, and Kaya Scodelario. "The Gentlemen is going from strength to strength and everyone is desperate to make it work," a source told The Sun. "Robert is an industry icon and Theo himself made it clear he wanted him to be part of the show."
Meanwhile, reports have indicated that the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, will not be cast in the new series. "Meghan though is now out of contention. There was a meeting but it's been decided she won't be part of the cast," the source added.
Lead actor Theo James had previously expressed enthusiasm for Carlyle's potential involvement, stating, "In terms of people I would like to see on the show, I would like someone psychopathic like old-school Robbie Carlyle." James also playfully dismissed rumors of Markle's casting, joking that Prince Harry would be playing one of his love interests. "I think it's a spurious rumour. She'd fit in well because she's actually from the Royal Family, but I think the practicalities of that are impossible," he stated.
Ray Winstone and Hugh Bonneville also weighed in on the rumors, with Winstone suggesting Markle would be a "better-looking" addition and Bonneville calling the idea "a genius bit of marketing."
Maya Jama, who made her scripted acting debut in the second series, is also expected to return for the third season.
The second series of "The Gentlemen" follows James's character, Eddie, as he attempts to gain full control of his estate while navigating the criminal underworld. The plot involves the drug baron Bobby, who is aware of Eddie and Susie's ambitions to expand their criminal enterprise, including their interest in "decriminalizing marijuana."
