RJ Mitte, 'Breaking Bad' Actor and Disability Advocate, Dies by Suicide at 34

RJ Mitte, best known for his portrayal of Walter White Jr. in the acclaimed AMC series "Breaking Bad," died by suicide on Monday at his home in Brownsville, Texas. He was 34.

Mitte's representative confirmed the cause of death to Fox News Digital, stating, "Sadly, we can confirm that suicide was the cause of death." The representative also issued a statement mourning the actor and disability rights advocate, highlighting his contributions beyond his acting career.

"RJ Mitte was best known for his role as Walter 'Flynn' White Jr. on AMC’s critically acclaimed, award-winning series ‘Breaking Bad.’ Drawing from his own experience living with cerebral palsy, Mitte brought authenticity to the role and built a platform on disability awareness and inclusion," the statement read. "Beyond entertaining friends and family around the world, he served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s."

Mitte, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a child, used his platform to advocate for increased representation and challenged stereotypes for people with disabilities. He also served as president of The Mitte Foundation, which supported philanthropic efforts and community initiatives.

The news prompted heartfelt tributes from his "Breaking Bad" co-stars. Bryan Cranston, who played his on-screen father Walter White, expressed his devastation on Instagram. "I’m in deep despair as I write this tonight," Cranston wrote, recalling Mitte as a joyful and enthusiastic young actor when he was cast at age 14. He reflected on their continued relationship after the series and shared his regret about a recently postponed lunch meeting. "But I do know that I loved him. I’ll miss you, son."

Aaron Paul, who portrayed Jesse Pinkman, also shared his grief. "I am at a loss. I am heartbroken over this news. RJ, I love you my friend. You will be missed," Paul said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. He added a message of support for others, saying, "And to whoever happens to be reading this, please know you are loved, and you are not alone."

In the days leading up to his death, Mitte appeared on "The Joe Vulpis Podcast," released on October 5th, where he spoke about living life to the fullest and the finite nature of time. He emphasized that the greatest gift from "Breaking Bad" was the platform it provided for his advocacy work, allowing him to lend his voice to causes that made a meaningful impact on people's lives. He considered his work with his foundation, giving back to the community, his greatest achievement.

Mitte appeared in all five seasons of "Breaking Bad," featuring in 56 episodes. His other acting credits include roles in "Switched at Birth," "The Guardians of Justice," "Hannah Montana," and "Everybody Hates Chris."
