Richard Madden Tipped as Shock Contender for Next James Bond
Bookmakers have significantly shortened the odds for Scottish actor Richard Madden to take on the iconic 007 role, sparking renewed speculation.

Richard Madden has unexpectedly become a leading contender to portray the next James Bond, as bookmakers have dramatically reduced his odds. The Scottish actor, known for his role as Robb Stark in the HBO series Game of Thrones, is now a prominent name in the ongoing speculation about who will succeed Daniel Craig.
William Hill, a prominent bookmaker, has seen a surge of interest in Madden, shortening his odds from 40/1 to 14/1. This move places him among the potential candidates for the coveted role.
Despite Madden's rising profile in the betting, Jack Lowden remains the favorite to become the next 007, with his odds also shortening from 4/5 to 4/6. Callum Turner is currently the closest challenger to Lowden, with odds at 3/1. Other actors in contention include Jacob Elordi at 8/1, and Jack O'Connell and Josh O'Connor, both priced at 12/1.
A spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, noted Madden's significant shift in the betting. "Madden's move adds another interesting name to the mix, but Lowden continues to lead the way as speculation over who will become the next 007 continues," Phelps stated.
Adding to the intrigue, screenwriter Steven Knight confirmed last month that the next James Bond has already been cast. While writing the script for the new installment, Knight mentioned that having the actor in mind makes the writing process easier, though he emphasized the importance of writing the character rather than the actor.
Knight described the Bond universe as distinct, emphasizing its British identity and its separation from DC or Marvel properties. He expressed a sense of duty in contributing to the franchise, stating, "It's like something if you're a British writer, you have to do."
Speculation surrounding Daniel Craig's successor has intensified since Amazon MGM Studios announced auditions were taking place in May. The search for the next Bond is reportedly being led by casting director Nina Gold and director Denis Villeneuve.
Richard Osman, presenter and co-host of the podcast 'The Rest Is Entertainment,' has also shared insights, claiming to have been definitively told who the new Bond is likely to be, though he cautioned that this information is not yet confirmed. The name he heard was Jack Lowden. Osman praised Lowden as a "brilliant actor" who possesses the "real Daniel Craig energy" and could convincingly portray both action and comedic elements, making him a potentially "sensational" choice.
Marina Hyde, Osman's co-host, agreed with the assessment of Lowden, highlighting his age of 36 as advantageous for the long-term commitment required for the role, suggesting he is of a suitable age to star in at least two films.
Jack Lowden, who also appeared in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, is slated to play Mr. Darcy in an upcoming Netflix adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. His wife, actress Saoirse Ronan, has previously expressed her support for him taking on the 007 role.
