Retired Decorator Sells Pokémon Card Collection for $2 Million

A retired decorator has become a multimillionaire after selling his extensive collection of Pokémon cards, stored for 15 years in his attic, for £1.56 million (approximately $2 million USD) at auction.

The man, from Woking, Surrey, who asked to remain anonymous, discovered the potential value of his cards after reading a newspaper article about a single Pokémon card selling for over £6,000. His collection was subsequently auctioned at Ewbank's on Wednesday, where it achieved a record price for a trading card auction in the UK and potentially in Europe.

"I know people always talk about finding treasure in the attic, but in my case that is literally true," the seller stated. He explained that his son began collecting the cards in the late 1990s. The collector purchased some complete sets of cards from Malaysia via eBay, with one set that cost him £300 at the time selling for £75,000 at the recent auction. The cards were reportedly kept in bespoke binders and remained sealed while in storage.

The collection was put into storage after his son lost interest in the Japanese gaming and film franchise.
