Renegade Zoo, an alt-pop band comprising neurodivergent and physically diverse musicians, has experienced a period of significant activity, marked by the release of their debut album and performances at prominent local festivals. The band was formed through the Tuned In Project, a creative arts initiative in Londonderry aimed at young adults with learning disabilities.
This year, Renegade Zoo launched their first album, which showcases their distinct alt-pop sound. Following the album's release, the group performed at the Foyle Maritime Festival during the summer. They also took to the stage at the Stendhal Festival.
Donna Marie Duddy, known as DM, a rapper within the band, described Renegade Zoo as a project focused on "not putting limits on ourselves." She also emphasized the importance of friendship and the opportunity to engage in songwriting, a pursuit she found less accessible before joining the band. Duddy noted that while lyrics come more easily to her, melodies present a greater challenge. MUSICIANS from the Derry-based Tuned In Project, which supports young adults with learning disabilities, are behind the alt-pop band Renegade Zoo. "The lyrics come much easier than the melodies," she says. Renegade Zoo are made up of students from the Derry-based Tuned In Project which supports young adults with learning disabilities.
The band's identity is rooted in its members' diverse experiences and abilities, with Duddy highlighting the collaborative and supportive environment fostered within Renegade Zoo. The musicians involved are all students at the Tuned In Project, which continues to be the incubator for their creative endeavors.
