Reading Festival has announced an overhaul of its stages, which includes the discontinuation of the BBC Introducing stage, a platform that has showcased emerging artists since 2008. Festival Republic, the event's organizer, stated that the change is intended to allow for a "much wider pool of emerging talent" to perform. The BBC Introducing stage previously hosted artists such as Ed Sheeran and Florence + the Machine.
The newly introduced Canopy stage will serve as the primary platform for new and breaking acts. According to Festival Republic, this new stage will allow for the booking of any new music artist, rather than limiting performers to those selected by the BBC. "The change is fundamentally about supporting a more diverse range of up-and-coming artists," the organizers said in a statement, expressing hope that these artists will eventually headline the festival.
The BBC Introducing stage had been a significant feature at the Berkshire festival for over a decade, supporting a substantial portion of UK artists on the festival's lineup each year. Tommy Longhurst, lead singer of the band Only the Poets, described the discontinuation as "sad news" for young musicians, noting the existing challenges in the music industry for newcomers, including the struggle for grassroots venues.
Longhurst, whose band has performed on the BBC Introducing stage at Reading in previous years, including 2025, highlighted the stage's importance. He stated, "We hold those memories so highly and it was such a poignant moment for us to get to play a festival that inspired us to start the band." He expressed concern that the change removes a "huge opportunity from up and coming artists."
