Raye Claims Mercury Prize, Swaps Heels for Slippers Post-Win

Raye made a triumphant exit from the 2026 Mercury Prize ceremony, gong in hand, after winning the coveted album prize for her sophomore release, "This Music May Contain Hope." The singer, 28, swapped her awards show heels for a pair of cozy slippers as she departed Newcastle's Utilita Arena. She was accompanied by fellow nominee Jade Thirlwall.

Raye, who covered her green gown with a faux fur coat, appeared stunned by the win. "I cannot tell you how grateful I am to be holding this. I'm shaking, I'm jet-lagged, I'm tired, I'm grateful!" she said during her acceptance speech. She also reflected on her journey to independence after facing challenges with a former record label, emphasizing the importance of albums over solely focusing on singles.

"Hope is a very cheesy word, especially for us British people... but hope is something we all need," Raye added, expressing her gratitude for the recognition of her album.

The ceremony, hosted by Lauren Laverne, marked the second consecutive year the Mercury Prize has been held in Newcastle. The night featured performances by artists including Dove Ellis, Florence + The Machine, JADE, Knats, Kojey Radical, Nia Archives, Olivia, and Raye herself.

Despite not winning the top prize, Jade Thirlwall maintained a positive spirit. The singer, who recently saw her song "Angel Of My Dreams" gain viral traction after being featured in a Victoria's Secret Fashion Show segment with Kylie Jenner, was seen posing for photos with fans. The increased attention led to a significant surge in streaming figures for "Angel Of My Dreams" and for JADE globally.

Thirlwall, a former member of Little Mix, had previously shared social media content reflecting on the viral success of her song, humorously noting the unexpected resurgence of a track released in July 2024. She also posted videos of herself contemplating song choices for the awards ceremony.

Other nominees and performers, including Nia Archives and Florence Welch, were also seen departing the event.
