A young woman who visited Bar Bambi on ACDC Lane in Melbourne’s central business district says she was left "humiliated" after an encounter with a member of the bar’s door staff, a complaint that has renewed scrutiny of the venue after a previous wave of one-star reviews.
The woman, identified as Nikita in media reports, told Daily Mail she and friends arrived at the popular Italian-inspired bar at about 10 p.m. for a casual Friday night. She said a man working the entryway bent down, spoke to her in a quiet tone and focused on her boyfriend’s Nike jumper, reading the slogan and remarking, "Oh, Nike, grow your soul." She said the doorman told them to return around 11 p.m. for a possible walk-in table. While waiting, she said, she overheard the same staffer ask a group of men whether they had any women with them before admitting them.
Nikita said the interaction worsened when the couple returned about 10:55 p.m. She said the man repeatedly directed his remarks to her boyfriend rather than to her, and then leaned in and told her, "Desperation is an ugly face on you." She described feeling stunned, shaken and publicly embarrassed in front of friends.
"I wasn't desperate," Nikita said, according to the report. "We were just trying to find a decent bar nearby. But that comment stuck with me all night." She said the episode left her deterred from recommending the venue and that she would not return.
Bar Bambi is run by former reality television contestant Nick Russian and his wife, Rozalia. The venue has been a well-known night spot in Melbourne and has previously hosted public figures, including former MasterChef judge George Calombaris and celebrity couple Chris and Rebecca Judd, according to publicity and past coverage.
The bar drew widespread attention in 2022 when it was subject to an onslaught of one-star reviews. Management described that wave as an "orchestrated campaign" and said it intended to pursue legal action over the matter. Since then, new one-star reviews have appeared on the bar’s public listings and the venue has frequently responded to online criticisms directly, sometimes with pointed retorts.
In several publicly visible replies, Bar Bambi addressed complaints about drink pours and food quality. One customer who wrote a one-star review alleging a short pour on cocktails received a response from the venue stating, "Ridiculous and absolutely false commentary. All drinks are a standard pour." Another reviewer who accused the kitchen of serving "microwave" food was met with a reply pointing out that the reviewer had given one-star ratings to multiple leading Melbourne restaurants in earlier posts.
Despite the contested reviews and public exchanges, Bar Bambi’s aggregate rating remains about 3.9 stars from more than 600 reviews, with a mix of five-star endorsements praising the food, cocktails and atmosphere.
Daily Mail reported Nikita’s account and her decision to publicly discourage others from visiting. The publication said it contacted Bar Bambi for comment. The venue has previously issued statements rejecting coordinated attacks on its reputation and indicating a willingness to pursue legal remedies, but it has not issued a public response to the specific incident reported by Nikita as of the time of publication.
The episode highlights ongoing tensions between hospitality venues and patrons over door policy, customer service and online review culture. Bar operators and patrons have increasingly used public review platforms to air disputes, while some businesses have formally challenged negative review campaigns through legal avenues or public rebuttals.
This story was reported by Daily Mail and includes direct quotations attributed to the patron in that report. Attempts to obtain an on-the-record response from Bar Bambi regarding the incident described were noted by the reporting outlet.
