Paris Jackson has revealed that she accepted a secret marriage proposal while under the influence of drugs. In a recent interview on Alex Cooper's "Call Her Daddy" podcast, the 28-year-old singer, daughter of the late Michael Jackson, also discussed the reasons behind ending her engagement to musician Justin Long.
Jackson described the engagement, which occurred while she and Long were reportedly "strung out on drugs," as her second engagement that she called off. She stated that while the relationship felt real to her, the ring was purchased with her money without her knowledge. Jackson marked six years of sobriety earlier in 2026 and has previously spoken about her past struggles with heroin and alcohol, which she used to cope with depression and trauma following her father's death.
"If I have a hit of weed or a drink, I'm going to go back on heroin," Jackson said, explaining that she realized she couldn't stop even after reducing her use of harder substances. She described hitting a "breaking point" and her "bottom."
When discussing the end of her engagement to Long, with whom she had been in a relationship for approximately three years, Jackson indicated that she needed to be certain about her partner. She noted that despite having a support system of therapists and friends, her reasons for staying in the relationship were not strong enough. "Just because I've realized just because someone is a good person doesn't mean they're my person," she stated. "And I have to be happy. I realized that my non-negotiables are allowed to be non-negotiables."
Jackson and Long, who were bandmates, reportedly split in 2025, a few months after he proposed. She also reflected on her experiences in Los Angeles, a city she described as not prioritizing loyalty, but acknowledged that loyal relationships exist. "I have some of the most incredible men in my life that love their wives, that love their kids, that are just such stand-up dudes that would never dream of f*****g that up," she said.
Jackson's time being single after the failed engagement led her to realize she did not want to overlook significant issues in future relationships. She concluded that she can afford to be more selective, raising her standards, which have historically been low.
