Gone are the days of simple pre-prom gatherings at a classmate's house. Today, affluent parents are increasingly investing tens of thousands of dollars in elaborate send-off parties for their children's proms, transforming the events into high-production celebrations.

These over-the-top pre-prom parties often rival the scale of celebrity award show events, featuring professional photographers, custom decor, and gourmet catering. Lanise Gartei, a mother from Philadelphia, spent approximately $6,000 on a prom send-off for her daughter, which included a red carpet, a step-and-repeat backdrop, large balloons, and a Lamborghini rental. She also funded a custom dress costing $3,000, stating, "I feel like it’s definitely a celebration, and you should go all out if you can for your kid."

Another Philadelphia family hired an event planner to create a Cinderella-inspired party in a city lot, costing $27,000. Wanda Burgos Matos opted for a $12,000 Bridgerton-themed event for her daughter Madison's prom send-off. These events are so elaborate that some families are even arranging for private jet transportation for their teens to arrive at prom.

Photographers specializing in prom events are also capitalizing on this trend. Hubaidullai Faruku, a photographer based in Staten Island, offers "Prom Packages" that can cost hundreds of dollars, providing paparazzi-style photos at locations chosen by the clients. Faruku stated he averages 15 prom clients per month during the season.

After-prom celebrations have also evolved beyond casual house parties. Gen Z attendees are opting for curated events in Manhattan clubs, rented yachts, and party cruises. Platforms like AfterPromNYC and After Prom Central organize supervised events in venues such as the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square, Eden Night Club, and Harbor NYC. These events typically include DJ entertainment, food, and photo booths, with an emphasis on professional security and adult supervision, and no alcohol.

Tickets for these supervised after-prom events range from $45 to $80, with discounted group rates available. Schools can also rent entire venues for private parties. John Nova, CEO of After Prom Central, works with schools to find venues that can accommodate up to 1,000 students and tries to accommodate budgets, noting that some schools opt for exclusive nightclub venues at a cost of around $75 per student. These after-parties aim to provide a safe and engaging environment with licensed security, DJs, and entertainment options, preventing students from searching for random, unsupervised locations.
