The latest episode of Apple TV+'s "Nocturne" delivered a chilling cliffhanger, leaving viewers with pressing questions about the fate of key characters and the nature of the threat they face. Series co-showrunner John Hlavin sat down with Decider to unravel the mysteries presented in Episode 3, titled "Eyes on the Inside."
Felicia's Fate and the Sandman's Identity
The episode concluded with a deeply unsettling scene: an anonymous caller warns the task force that Sally Gifford is gone and has been "taken," followed by a glimpse into the terrified eyes of a young girl held captive. Despite the ominous tone, Hlavin confirmed that Felicia Frost, whose disappearance is central to the plot, is alive. "We wanted to answer that question," Hlavin stated, explaining the decision to reveal Felicia's survival early in the season. "Keeping her alive keeps everybody at that same level of stakes. The stakes of, ‘Will you get her?’ But there are also emotional stakes."
While the caller's identity remains ambiguous, the masked figure seen entering the captive's room is strongly suggested to be "The Sandman," an accomplice of Jurek Walter. This theory stems from Michael's earlier recollection of an individual whose "fingers were made of glass" and who used an unknown method to induce sleep. The show hints that The Sandman employs Sevoflurane, an anesthetic found in Jurek's previous victims, to subdue his targets.
Unraveling the Symbol and Jurek's Plan
Episode 3 also delved into the recurring cryptic symbol discovered by Jonah. This symbol has appeared at past crime scenes connected to Jurek Walter and was also seen at Sally Gifford's home and within Riverside Psychiatric Hospital. While its precise meaning is still unclear, it serves as a clear marker of Jurek's involvement.
Meanwhile, Jurek himself is seen meticulously collecting items in his prison cell, including a plastic Jell-O cup, petroleum jelly, a battery, and wires. This clandestine activity suggests Jurek is formulating a plan, though its nature remains a mystery. "Uh oh! Looks like Jurek’s got a plan!" the report notes.
New episodes of "Nocturne" premiere Fridays on Apple TV+.
