Nirvana Honored with Video Vanguard Award at 2026 MTV VMAs

Nirvana was honored with the Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday. The prestigious award acknowledges artists who have made a significant impact on music and culture through their work.

Bass guitarist Krist Novoselic, drummer Dave Grohl, and rhythm guitarist Pat Smear accepted the award on behalf of the band. Following a montage of archival footage, Novoselic addressed the audience, expressing gratitude to Nirvana's fans and MTV. He paid tribute to the band's frontman, Kurt Cobain, stating that the vision for their music videos stemmed from Cobain's unique artistry. "Nirvana continues to resonate so deeply because people are still hungry for authenticity, for something real, something uncompromising, something that tells you it’s OK to come as you are. Kurt would’ve loved that legacy," Novoselic said.

Nirvana, founded in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987 by Cobain and Novoselic, rose to prominence in the early 1990s, bringing alternative rock into the mainstream. The band's lineup also included Grohl and touring guitarist Pat Smear. Cobain died by suicide in April 1994 at the age of 27, leading to the band's disbandment.

This recognition comes shortly after the 35th anniversary of Nirvana's groundbreaking sophomore album, "Nevermind," released on Sept. 24, 1991. The album, featuring hits such as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Come As You Are," dethroned Michael Jackson's "Dangerous" from the top of the Billboard charts and is widely credited with revolutionizing the music scene of the 1990s.

In a 1992 interview with Rolling Stone, Cobain reflected on the album's success, expressing a hope that other bands would continue to carry the torch of alternative music forward. He acknowledged the label of "voice of a generation" but expressed a desire for fans to mature and realize there are more facets to life than rigidly adhering to a rock and roll identity.

Nirvana made their MTV Video Music Awards debut on Sept. 9, 1992. The band previously won five VMAs between 1992 and 1994, including Best New Artist in a Video and Best Alternative Video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in 1992, Best Alternative Video for "In Bloom" in 1993, and Best Alternative Video and Best Art Direction in a Video for "Heart-Shaped Box" in 1994.

Previous recipients of the Video Vanguard Award in recent years include Mariah Carey (2025), Katy Perry (2024), Shakira (2023), Nicki Minaj (2022), Missy Elliott (2019), Jennifer Lopez (2018), and Pink (2017). Duran Duran was the last rock band to receive the award in 2003.

Van Toffler, a VMAs producer, expressed surprise that Nirvana had not received the Vanguard Award sooner. "Nirvana is a timeless band," Toffler told The Hollywood Reporter. "I can’t think of a more impactful band in the history of MTV." He recalled the profound impact Cobain's death had on MTV and its audience, noting how the network shifted to a news format on the day of his passing. Toffler also highlighted Cobain's enduring influence, citing artists across genres who cite Nirvana as a significant inspiration, from Olivia Rodrigo and Selena Gomez to Dr. Dre.
