Nirvana Honored with MTV Video Vanguard Award, Members Pay Tribute to Kurt Cobain

Nirvana was honored with the Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, with surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic paying tribute to their late frontman, Kurt Cobain.
Grohl, 57, and Novoselic, 61, accepted the award at Los Angeles' Peacock Theater alongside touring guitarist Pat Smear, 67. Novoselic spoke about Cobain, who died in 1994 at age 27, calling him "one of one" and "one of the greatest artists of all time." He credited Cobain's vision for the band's iconic music videos, including "Smells Like Teen Spirit," which he described as a "dystopian pep rally with anarchist cheerleaders."
Novoselic also reflected on the band's lasting legacy, noting that "Nirvana continues to resonate so deeply because people are still hungry for authenticity for something real, something uncompromising, something that tells you it's ok to come as you are." He added, "Kurt would've loved that legacy."
Public Enemy's Chuck D introduced the segment, highlighting Nirvana's "loud, beautiful [and] daringly open" sound and their "poetic, raw, and deeply human" lyrics. He emphasized their originality and fearlessness in an era he described as becoming formulaic.
Nirvana, formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987, pioneered the grunge rock movement. The band garnered five VMA awards during their career, including wins for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "In Bloom" in 1992 and 1993, and for "Heart-Shaped Box" in 1994.
Pat Smear's act of lighting a cigarette on stage during the ceremony sparked conversation on social media, with some users interpreting it as a fittingly rebellious gesture. One commenter speculated the cigarette was "for Kurt."
Van Toffler, a producer for the VMAs, expressed surprise that Nirvana had not previously received the Video Vanguard Award, telling The Hollywood Reporter that the band is "a timeless band" and "a timeless band." He recalled that when Cobain died, MTV halted regular programming to become a news channel due to the profound impact on their audience.
Recent recipients of the Video Vanguard Award include Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, Shakira, and Nicki Minaj. Nirvana is the latest rock group to receive the honor since Duran Duran in 2003.
