Nigella Lawson Praised by Great British Bake Off Viewers in Debut

Great British Bake Off viewers have welcomed Nigella Lawson to the tent, with many expressing their delight at her debut as a new judge on Tuesday night. Lawson, 66, joined hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding, and fellow judge Paul Hollywood, in a skit that saw departing judge Prue Leith, 86, "regenerate" into her.

Fans took to social media platform X to share their positive reactions. Many viewers praised Lawson's "warm and witty" presence, with one user writing, "Love how Nigella is inhaling these cakes - proper tasting, what a woman!"

Another commenter noted, "Nigella bringing back the joy, wit and honesty that Mel and Sue had," referencing former hosts of the show. Viewers also humorously suggested that Lawson was now the "incumbent Doctor" in reference to the Doctor Who theme of her introduction.

Lawson's arrival coincided with the first challenge of the series, a recreation of one of her signature stout cakes. The challenge saw contestant Molly experience a dramatic mishap when her cake fell to the floor, prompting consolaion from host Alison Hammond. Molly explained she had been "only using one oven glove" and the "cake tin got caught on the oven shelf."

Ahead of her debut, Lawson expressed some nerves, telling Radio Times that she doesn't consider herself a "polished" baker and worried about her suitability as a judge. "I came to baking later in life and because of that it's something that intrigues and fascinates me. I've learnt by doing and I'm a home baker, not a professional," she said. Lawson noted her sympathy for the contestants, who are also home bakers.

For over two decades, Lawson has been a prominent figure in British food culture, known for her best-selling cookery books and television series. While this is not her first time judging televised cooking competitions, her previous roles, such as on MasterChef Australia, focused on professional chefs rather than amateur bakers.

Paul Hollywood commented on the dynamic between the judges, stating that each judge brings their own character to the show. "Prue was different to Nigella and Nigella is different to Mary," he said, referring to previous judges. "They each bring their own character to it, and Nigella is a very warm person, especially to the bakers. More so than Mary was and I think more akin to Prue. There's a very nurturing nature to Nigella, which was quite strong this year. Whereas me, I suppose I'm the constant. So I remain in my position of being constructively critical."
