New 'Strictly Come Dancing' Hosts Face Scrutiny After Shaky Live Debut

Concerns over the presenting abilities of Josh Widdicombe and Johannes Radebe have surfaced following the first live episode of "Strictly Come Dancing." The BBC reportedly harbored anxieties about the new hosts stepping into the roles previously held by Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, particularly given Widdicombe's limited experience with large-scale live shows and Radebe's inexperience as a live anchor.

These fears were amplified after Widdicombe was observed silently mouthing his co-host's autocue lines during a pre-recorded segment of the popular dance competition. This incident reportedly heightened unease among BBC staff regarding potential on-air stumbles during the live broadcast.

The live show itself appeared to validate some of these concerns. At the program's outset, Radebe delivered an awkward line: "We are live which means anything can happen on this ballroom floor." Co-host Emma Willis responded, "You're making me nervous."

Radebe's role involved interviewing couples after their performances from a segment referred to as the Claud-itorium. However, viewers on social media noted that Radebe was heard reading out the terms and conditions, including that there would be no vote, while couples were still ascending the stairs to join him, leading to awkwardness.

One viewer commented on social media, "Why isn't the director having a word with Jojo not to start talking while contestants are only half way up the stairs?" Another added, "I love Jojo but he needs to stop talking before the couples come up the stairs – it's very awkward."

Widdicombe's presenting style also drew attention. During a discussion by judge Motsi Mabuse about Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey's quickstep, Widdicombe attempted to interject and move the conversation to Shirley Ballas. Mabuse responded to Widdicombe's interruption by saying, "Are we going to be friends or enemies? You choose now!"

Despite the hosting challenges, the competition saw its first standing ovation of the series. EastEnders actress Lacey Turner received this honor for her cha cha cha, which earned her 27 points from the judges.
