A new cohort of drag performers, who describe themselves as the "Ru Generation" due to their upbringing watching the hit reality competition, are set to compete in the eighth season of "RuPaul's Drag Race UK." The new cast aims to spark renewed interest in drag artistry, both on and off the television screen.
For some performers, the show's influence has created a disconnect between audience expectations and the realities of the drag business. Flesh, a drag performer of five years, noted a decline in turnout at live shows, attributing it partly to soaring costs for audiences. While "RuPaul's Drag Race" offers "the joy and the power of drag from the comfort of your own home," Flesh stated that this accessibility comes at a cost to performers, whose "income and opportunities in the real world do not reflect" the show's high production values and perceived glamour.
Social media presents a similar challenge, described as a "double-edged sword" by Flesh. While vital for promoting live events, excessive online visibility can paradoxically decrease audience inclination to attend shows in person. "If the public aren't willing to support drag outside of the Drag Race vehicle," Flesh warned, "then we won't be able to sustain Drag Race."
Among the 12 contestants vying for the crown this season is Paris Baby, who identifies as "UK's British Bajan Barbie." She has heralded the new series as a "drag renaissance," expressing hope that it will be "very well received" internationally and reignite broader interest in drag. Paris Baby hopes to bring a unique "je ne sais quoi" to the show and the wider drag community.
"RuPaul's Drag Race UK" series eight is scheduled to premiere on BBC Three at 22:00 BST and will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
