New Love Interest Introduced for Murtagh in 'Outlander: Blood of My Blood'

Season 2 of Starz's "Outlander: Blood of My Blood" has introduced a new romantic interest for the character Murtagh. The second episode of the season, titled "The Veil of Time," features the emergence of Grace Cameron, a new maid in the household of Jocasta.

Murtagh, portrayed by Rory Alexander, and Brian, played by Jamie Roy, arrive at Castle Leoch to inform the MacKenzie clan of Lord Lovat's decision to join the Jacobite cause. However, their arrival is met with a physical altercation with Dougal and his associates. When Mrs. Fitz tends to an injured Murtagh, she entrusts him to Grace, played by Ruby Fubara. An immediate connection forms between Murtagh and Grace, which Jocasta observes.

Executive producers Matthew B. Roberts and Maril Davis elaborated on the decision to introduce Grace as a new love interest for Murtagh. Roberts explained that after Murtagh experienced heartbreak in the previous season, the writers felt he "needed a home." Integrating Grace into Jocasta's storyline was viewed as an organic way to develop more narrative depth.

"They have a lovely relationship. It blossoms, I think, over the season. It’s going to be really cool to watch them develop this. It was fun writing it and breaking the story for it," Roberts said.

Davis added that the series aims to explore the elements that shaped Murtagh into the more curmudgeonly character seen in the original "Outlander" series. "Everyone forgets that Murtagh became that way, curmudgeonly, as we saw in Outlander. What led to that?" Davis questioned. "Matt has always said this: we were keen to see young, hopeful Murtagh, which Rory has portrayed now, but what led to him becoming that way? And we’re seeing some of that. He was in love and there was a time when he was hopeful. So it’s fun to see that for him."

Grace Cameron is a new character created specifically for "Outlander: Blood of My Blood" and is not mentioned in the original "Outlander" series. Her potential connection to the existing "Outlander" universe, including her English accent shared with Claire, remains a subject of speculation. Roberts noted that Fubara "hit the ground running" and is an "all-around great addition to the love stories on Outlander."
