Netflix Series Explores the Existential Crisis of a Forgotten Actor

Eight-episode Japanese series "Did Someone Happen to Mention Me?", now streaming on Netflix, delves into the bizarre predicament of Gen Takasegawa (Koji Yakusho), a once-famous actor whose presence has been collectively forgotten.

The series, written by Kankuro Kudo, blends comedy, drama, and fantasy to tell the story of Gen, the son of a legendary Showa-era film star. Determined to forge his own identity, Gen became a prominent actor and a familiar face in Royal Ham commercials. However, after a public declaration to "forget about him" following marital infidelity, Gen moves to London. He later lands the lead role in a production of King Lear at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

Upon his planned return to Japan in August 2026, Gen discovers that his fame has vanished. Despite his existing merchandise, advertisements, and online presence, people now perceive him as a stranger. His attempts to reconnect with his ex-wife, Yoko Nonomura, and daughter, Ema, are met with complete unfamiliarity. Gen suspects a side effect from a recently developed vaccine, which nearly the entire population received, may be responsible for this widespread amnesia.

Reduced to poverty and anonymity, Gen takes a job at the rundown Sauna Shirakaba, working alongside young actor Tetsu Okamoto and manager Chijimi. The series follows Gen's determined, if often desperate, efforts to regain recognition.

Internationally acclaimed actor Koji Yakusho, known for his roles in "Tampopo," "Shall We Dance?," "Cure," and "Perfect Days," anchors the series with a performance that navigates Gen's journey from inflated ego to rock bottom. The supporting cast, including Noriko Eguchi as Machiko, Yoh Yoshida as Yoko Nonomura, Yumi Kawai as Ema Nonomura, Kento Kaku as Tetsu Okamoto, and Maki Sakai as Chijimi, contribute to the show's quirky charm and depth.

"Did Someone Happen to Mention Me?" has been praised for its absurd humor, sharp irony, and genuine heart. The series raises questions about validation, success, and the nature of fame, all while portraying a protagonist who, despite his flaws, remains compelling. Comparisons have been drawn to films such as "It's A Wonderful Life," "Unknown," "Yesterday," and "Spider-Man: No Way Home" for their themes of forgotten identities or alternate realities.

The series concludes with Gen, now homeless and penniless, begging for food, a stark representation of his fall from grace. "Did Someone Happen to Mention Me?" is described as a unique and entertaining watch for fans of international cinema, heartfelt comedy, and existential exploration.
