Netflix's 'Pride and Prejudice' Trailer Drops Amidst Concerns Over 'Sexless' Adaptation
The first look at the new six-part series starring Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden reveals the iconic Regency romance, but sources suggest a lack of chemistry.
The first trailer for Netflix's upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" has been released, offering a glimpse of the central romance between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. The six-part series, written by Dolly Alderton, features Emma Corrin as Elizabeth and Jack Lowden as Darcy.
The trailer showcases key moments from the novel, including the characters' initial animosity and sharp dialogue. Mrs. Bennet, played by Olivia Colman, delivers the novel's famous opening line: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." The preview also includes scenes of Regency-era balls and picturesque country landscapes, culminating in a longing glance between Darcy and Elizabeth.
However, the trailer's release has been met with some apprehension. Sources speaking to The Daily Mail have described the adaptation as "desperately sexless," with "zero chemistry" between the lead actors. One insider commented, "Jack can do hot... but in this he just comes across as grumpy. His neckties do him no favours." This take has been contrasted unfavorably with the acclaimed 1995 BBC adaptation starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, which was praised for its ability to convey sensuality without explicit scenes.
Another point of contention for some viewers might be the styling of Lowden's character, with one source noting his wigs bear a resemblance to actor Simon Pegg. This assessment comes as Lowden is reportedly being considered for the role of James Bond, with screentests for the final contenders having taken place recently.
The cast also includes Jamie Demetriou as Mr. Collins, Freya Mavor as Jane Bennet, Daryl McCormack as Mr. Bingley, Rufus Sewell as Mr. Bennet, Rhea Norwood as Lydia Bennet, and Fiona Shaw as Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Olivia Colman, portraying Mrs. Bennet, is noted for her warmth and humor, with writer Dolly Alderton describing the actress as "fun, cheeky and mischievous."
Alderton has spoken about the challenges of adapting Austen's dense novel into a six-episode series. She revealed that early drafts included more explicit elements, such as a concept she called the "horny tree" draft. Alderton also shared advice received from Dame Emma Thompson, who starred in the 1995 film adaptation of "Sense and Sensibility," emphasizing the importance of casting, editing, and allowing the dialogue to speak for itself.
"Pride and Prejudice" is set to premiere on Netflix on December 3. The release year of 2026 in some surrounding content appears to be a placeholder or typo, as the premiere date is stated as December 3.
