Netflix's 'Hollywood Arts' Continues the 'Victorious' Legacy

Netflix has released "Hollywood Arts," a new teen sitcom serving as a spin-off to Dan Schneider's 2010-2013 Nickelodeon series "Victorious." The Schneider-free production centers on Trina Vega, the older sister of "Victorious" protagonist Tori Vega.

Trina, portrayed by Daniella Monet, is now a struggling actress. She accepts a substitute teaching position at her former performing arts school, Hollywood Arts, with the hope of landing her own big break. The series picks up after the retirement of eccentric acting teacher Erwin Sikowitz, leaving Principal Helen Dubois (Yvette Nicole Brown) to find a temporary replacement. Trina, despite lacking formal qualifications and self-awareness, possesses a strong sense of confidence.

The narrative follows Trina as she navigates her new role and encounters a diverse group of students, including the reserved "Techie" Emmy (Alyssa Miles), competitive friends Pepper (Emmy Liu-Wang) and Jen (Erika Swayze), and musician Qwest (Peyton Jackson). Initially, Trina is motivated by the prospect of discovering a talented student who could help her gain industry connections through nepotism. However, she finds herself drawn into the students' lives and the upcoming school showcase.

A significant subplot involves Emmy, a student who secretly possesses exceptional singing talent, which she hides to avoid living in the shadow of her purportedly star brother, Oscar (Martin Kamm). Trina eventually helps Emmy embrace her talent, and in doing so, begins to grow as an educator herself. The series also explores Oscar's struggle with his changing status at the school and Qwest's deception to remain enrolled.

"Hollywood Arts" aims to evoke nostalgia for "Victorious" and similar shows from the late 2000s and early 2010s, such as "iCarly" (2021) and "Wizards of Waverly Place." The show features musical numbers, humor, and a laugh track, characteristic of its predecessor. Critics note that while "Hollywood Arts" attempts to establish its own identity, it is inevitably compared to "Victorious," with the new series sometimes falling short of the original's impact.

Despite potential shortcomings, the performances are noted as committed, with Daniella Monet receiving praise for her portrayal of Trina, adding depth to a character originally known for her superficiality. The series concludes with Trina being confirmed as Sikowitz's permanent replacement, celebrated by her students.

The show is recommended for fans of "Victorious" seeking more content connected to the original series. It is available on Netflix.
