Netflix's 'Dead-End Job' Offers High-Stakes Horror Anthology
A man takes on increasingly dangerous and bizarre jobs to pay off a significant debt in this new Korean horror series.
Netflix's new Korean horror series, "Dead-End Job," presents an anthology format where the protagonist, Byeon Hyeok-jun (Lee Jae-wook), faces a series of terrifying and unconventional employment opportunities to settle a substantial debt.
After an ill-advised investment leaves him owing a loan shark over 140 million won (approximately $104,000), Hyeok-jun contemplates drastic measures. His life takes a surreal turn when he discovers an advertisement for high-paying part-time work. He is recruited by the mysterious Spider Staffing Agency, where the manager, Mr. S (Lee Hee-joon), offers him an astonishingly lucrative night-shift position at a convenience store, promising 50 times the minimum wage for a single shift.
Hyeok-jun's reluctance is overcome by a tense encounter with his creditor, leading him to accept the job. At the store, he finds a list of peculiar rules and soon experiences unsettling events after midnight. The situation escalates with the arrival of a late-starting second employee, raising questions about the necessity of two people for such a seemingly deserted establishment.
The series, created by Han Jun-hee, draws comparisons to classic horror anthologies like "Creepshow" and "Tales From The Crypt," despite maintaining consistent main characters. In each episode, Hyeok-jun accepts a new job from Mr. S, each offering immense pay but demanding extreme survival skills. These jobs often involve battling monstrous entities, such as a horde of rats forming a giant monster, or other similarly horrific challenges.
Parallel to Hyeok-jun's experiences, an investigator named Yeon-joo (Go Min-si) begins looking into the Spider Agency, seeking to understand its unusual employment practices. While Hyeok-jun's personal development remains somewhat opaque, his uncanny ability to survive extreme circumstances, despite a lack of inherent bravery, is a recurring element.
His younger sister, Ji-yoon (Kim Min-ha), is also slated to take on one of these perilous jobs, suggesting a broadening scope of dangerous assignments within the series. The visual effects department has been commended for its work, particularly in creating unsettling scenes involving moths and the aforementioned rat monster.
The show's first episode concludes with Hyeok-jun exhausted after his initial job, falling asleep while waiting for a bus. Yeon-joo finds his ID and notes that they will be seeing each other again. "Dead-End Job" is recommended for horror fans seeking thrilling, albeit sometimes character-light, entertainment.
