Netflix's new Spanish mystery, 'The Final Problem,' presents a classic whodunnit narrative, drawing parallels to Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie stories.
The film centers on Benjamin Basil (Jose Coronado), an actor whose career has waned since his acclaimed portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. A chance encounter with an old friend, Fonseca, leads Basil to a remote island named Santa Agueda, where a storm forces their yacht to dock. The island hosts a secluded luxury hotel, and its isolation soon becomes a crucial element of the unfolding drama.
Basil encounters Francisco Foxá, a crime novelist who believes Basil's past role as Holmes has imbued him with genuine deductive skills. These skills are put to the test when a guest, Elisa Mander, is found dead. A doctor at the hotel declares her death a suicide, but both Basil and Francisco suspect foul play. Despite Basil's insistence that he is merely an actor, his observational abilities and curiosity draw him into the investigation.
The story is set in 1959, featuring a lavish hotel environment where guests adhere to formal attire. The narrative unfolds with 13 individuals trapped on the island, any one of whom could be the killer.
'The Final Problem' is based on a novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. Viewers who enjoy shows like 'Sherlock' or 'Murder Is Easy' may find this film appealing.
Among the performances, María Valverde is noted for her role as Adela Figueroa, a friend of the deceased who appears to have secrets.
