Netflix Comedy 'Minimum Wage' Offers Brief, Amusing Glimpse Into Teen Pizzeria Life

The popular YouTube series "Minimum Wage" has been adapted for Netflix, retaining its low-budget aesthetic and young cast while adding veteran comedy actor Randall Park and slightly longer episodes. The series centers on "The Slice Club," a pizzeria staffed by teenagers earning minimum wage, who demonstrate a distinct lack of enthusiasm for their jobs.

Grace Reiter stars as the manager, Grace, who attempts to maintain order amidst the antics of her co-workers, played by Aidan Micho, Hyde Healy, Julia DiCesare, Luke Burke, Ryan Micho, and Tommy Armstrong. Their efforts often involve testing the limits of the walk-in freezer or engaging in other distractions rather than performing basic job duties. The pizzeria itself struggles with few customers, adding to its precarious situation.

The arrival of Mr. Sylvester, portrayed by Randall Park, the franchise owner, introduces a new dynamic. Sylvester, facing a divorce and having lost most of his assets, is considering whether to sell the unprofitable location. He is soon discovered by the teen employees to be living in the pizzeria's basement.

"Minimum Wage" utilizes a mockumentary format, with confessional interviews serving as a vehicle for humor by contrasting the characters' on-screen behavior with their off-screen commentary. The series draws comparisons to "The Office" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."

Park, a familiar face in comedy, plays a role akin to a seasoned adult figure within the chaotic environment. The ensemble cast, many of whom originated from the YouTube series, displays comfort and chemistry, making the outlandish situations at The Slice Club generally amusing. Reiter, a recent addition to "Saturday Night Live," is noted for her performance as the most grounded character, while Julia DiCesare is praised for her portrayal of a naive, homeschooled teen.

The series, produced by American High, runs approximately 12-15 minutes per episode. While not "gut-grabbing hilarious," the show is described as a pleasant diversion. The overarching narrative, including the presence of a documentary crew and Mr. Sylvester's situation, provides a framework for the episodic comedy. The initial episode concludes with Mr. Sylvester moving into the basement and one of the crew members needing to retrieve incriminating items from the room.
