Natalie Portman Embraces Motherhood Again at 45
Actress shares her joy and wonder at welcoming her third child, her first with partner Tanguy Destable.
Natalie Portman has broken her silence on becoming a mother for the third time at the age of 45, describing the experience as "full of wonder" and her new baby as a "magical little human."
This is Portman's first child with her French musician partner, Tanguy Destable, 46. The couple welcomed their baby last month. Portman, an Oscar-winning actress, shared her thoughts on her new role as a mother to a newborn and her relationship with Destable in a cover story for Harper's Bazaar's forthcoming November issue.
Portman is also mother to son Aleph, 15, and daughter Amalia, nine, from her previous marriage to director-choreographer Benjamin Millepied. The former couple finalized their divorce in 2024.
"It gives me a whole new attention to my big kids too, as I am reminded of how recently they were these little fresh creations and how quickly they’ve blossomed into incredible humans with their own amazing personalities and senses of humour and ideas," Portman said.
She emphasized the importance of love and kindness in relationships, stating, "The most important thing is love. And I’m not embarrassed to say it. I do feel like it’s so simple, just being kind and loving and being able to laugh. That’s all that matters. That’s the joy of being this age. If it’s not that, I’m not spending my time there."
In addition to discussing her personal life, Portman's interview coincides with the release of her new film, "The Gallerist." The dark comedy thriller, in which she stars as Miami art gallery owner Polina Polinski, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and is set to be released next month.
Portman reflected on how early career setbacks have shaped her perspective. She recalled her first film, "The Professional," receiving poor reviews and performing poorly at the box office, followed by the critical reception of "Star Wars" when she was 16, which was financially successful but met with negative reviews for the cast.
"I think it was an amazing early lesson in how to read really bad things about yourself and then be able to be like, ‘I’m going to make another one. I’m going to show them,’" Portman stated. "I don’t remember talking to anyone about it. I didn’t want to show anyone that I was hurt or anything."
The accompanying photoshoot for Harper's Bazaar featured Portman in a variety of designer outfits, including a Dior coat and hat by Givenchy, a Simone Rocha dress, a Celine silk gown, a Louis Vuitton dress and bonnet, and a Loewe minidress.
