Monica Bellucci Embraces Aging as a 'Wonderful Gift'
The 62-year-old Italian actress reflects on maturity, femininity, and the beauty of a life lived.
Monica Bellucci, the acclaimed Italian actress and model, is embracing her 62nd year with a perspective that finds beauty and value in aging. In a recent cover story for Harper's Bazaar Spain's October issue, Bellucci shared her thoughts on maturity, stating, “There’s no real alternative: either you grow old and accept the process with dignity, or you die.” She added with a laugh, “Looking at it that way, I’d much rather grow old.”
Bellucci views aging not as a decline, but as a fortunate continuation of life. "Growing old means you’re fortunate enough to still be alive and have a future. Besides, maturity brings with it a wonderful gift: detachment,” she explained. This perspective informs her approach to her craft, enabling her to inhabit roles that require a deeper understanding of life experience.
Her role as Cristina in the film “Histoires de la nuit” (“The Birthday Party”), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, delves into a character who fears women become invisible with age. Bellucci, however, feels her own life experiences have enriched her ability to portray such complex characters. “I could never have played this role when I was 30 or 40, not even with layers of makeup to age myself,” she stated. “To give substance, weight, and truth to a character with that level of inner turmoil, you have to have lived.”
Photographed by Rocío Ramos for the magazine, Bellucci appeared in striking ensembles from Valentino and Dolce & Gabbana, adorned with diamonds and emeralds from Cartier. When asked about feeling beautiful, she offered a nuanced definition that extends beyond physical appearance. “Feeling beautiful today, is about having a rich inner life, a passion that inspires you, watching your children grow, gazing at the sea, having friends, a family you love … a fulfilling life as a woman.”
Bellucci, who is mother to daughters Deva, 22, and Léonie, 16, from her marriage to Vincent Cassel, considers love her greatest luxury. Reflecting on life's journey, she said, “Life is a perpetual transformation. That said, I’m proud of myself and of being a woman, because femininity is the strength of humanity.”
