Miranda Hart Moved to Tears by Viral Trend Inspired by Her 'Celebrity Traitors' Speech
The comedian's words on connection and laughter during chronic illness resonated with viewers, sparking a heartwarming online trend.
Miranda Hart experienced a deeply emotional response after her speech on the importance of "connection and laughter" during her struggles with chronic illness, delivered on "Celebrity Traitors," ignited a viral trend across social media.
During a recent episode of the BBC show, the comedian became visibly upset when her friend Joe Lycett was banished. The two had formed a strong bond in the castle, and Hart found it difficult to vote against Lycett, especially after he revealed his Faithful status.
Confiding in fellow contestant James Acaster, Hart expressed her surprise at her emotional reaction. She then drew parallels between the game and her personal experiences with Lyme disease and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME). "Connection and laughter and joy are bigger than this game," she told viewers. "And to meet someone and just play and laugh, it is all us humans need. I've had times in my life when I haven't had that through illness, and it has brought up that silly, sensitive soul."
Following the episode's airing, social media users began sharing clips of their own moments of connection and joy with friends and family, set to a soundtrack of Hart's words. The comedian shared some of these compilations on her Instagram Story, expressing her gratitude and emotion. "Oh wow. People are doing these. Stop making me cry! (Don't - I love a joyful cry...) So moved," she wrote.
Hart also reflected on her perspective regarding the self-help industry, suggesting that many offerings cater to those who are already well. "I also think it's part of the reason I struggle with the self-help industry," she explained. "Because so much of it is fads or for people who are well to feel more well, whereas when I wrote my book I was looking for the basic human needs that help us thrive or live better with illness of suffering. Play and connection being key treasures."
Elsewhere in the episode, Hart and Leigh-Anne Pinnock created another memorable moment when the Little Mix singer taught the comedian a dance move from the group's hit song "Touch." This impromptu dance lesson unintentionally saved them from being targeted by the Traitors, who were plotting their next move in another room.
Fans lauded the dance segment, particularly its juxtaposition with the Traitors' serious machinations. Many took to X, formerly Twitter, to call it a "TV moment of the year," praising the unexpected pairing and the comedic timing. Comments included "The Traitors trying to bore people to death with random cuts to Miranda and Leigh-Anne performing Touch has me in actual tears. That was the moment of the series;" and "Leigh-Anne and Miranda unknowingly avoiding murder because they were doing Little Mix choreography is the TV moment of the year."
