Miley Cyrus' New Album Suffers Historic Fall From Billboard Chart's No. 1 Spot

Miley Cyrus' latest album, "Bass Persuades," has achieved a notable, albeit undesirable, distinction in music chart history. After debuting at the No. 1 position on the Billboard 200 chart in its first week, the album plummeted to No. 157 in its second week. This dramatic decline marks the biggest fall from the No. 1 spot for a female artist in Billboard history.

The previous record was held by Madonna's "Madame X," which fell from No. 1 to No. 77 in 2019. Celine Dion's "Courage" subsequently broke this record, falling from the top spot to No. 111.

"Bass Persuades" is Cyrus' first album released under Atlantic Records, following her departure from Columbia Records earlier this year. The album's initial release was met with projections suggesting it would debut outside the top five. However, Atlantic Records implemented a significant promotional push to secure a No. 1 debut. These strategies included slashing the digital price of the album and releasing it in numerous physical formats, such as 16 vinyl variants, nine CD versions, six download variants, and a cassette tape.

These sales tactics proved effective, narrowly pushing "Bass Persuades" past country singer Ella Langley's "Dandelion" by approximately 70 units to achieve the No. 1 debut. Both Cyrus and Atlantic Records celebrated this narrow victory, with the label sending Cyrus a floral wreath shaped like a number one.

"'Bass Persuades' being #1 transcends a win," Cyrus stated on Instagram at the time of the debut. "This process has been some of the best times for me. Everyone involved made it possible and more importantly fun and memorable. Thank you Atlantic, my team, and everyone who walks beside me with conviction. I love you. To the fans you make my world go round. Making music for you brings immeasurable joy to my life. Forever."

While "Bass Persuades" has since experienced its historic fall, other artists are currently performing strongly on the Billboard charts. Taylor Swift's "The Life of a Showgirl" returned to No. 1, boosted by the release of its deluxe "Encore" edition. Olivia Rodrigo's "You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So In Love" holds the No. 2 position, demonstrating sustained popularity after four months on the chart. Langley's "Dandelion," which Cyrus narrowly beat the previous week, has fallen one spot to No. 3 after nearly six months on the chart.

Atlantic Records has been contacted for comment regarding the album's performance.

Cyrus has faced chart challenges in recent years, with her previous album, 2023's "Something Beautiful," also failing to achieve significant commercial success. Her career has largely been sustained by the immense success of her 2023 single "Flowers," which became her biggest hit to date and earned her the Record of the Year award at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Despite her recent chart struggles, anticipation for Cyrus' live performances remains high. She is scheduled to perform two sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl this month. Demand for tickets was exceptionally high, with an estimated 1.5 million fans attempting to secure one of the 18,000 available tickets. Cyrus has not embarked on a full tour since her 2014 "Bangerz" world tour, and she has indicated a potential interest in future residencies. She cited her desire to be home quickly after performing as a reason for choosing the Hollywood Bowl venue, noting that audiences will travel to her, rather than the other way around.
